Hazardous materials only deal damage while they are in your inventory, but that doesn't apply to other containers!
Hazardous materials will not deal damage while they are in another container such as a Backpack or Vessel. Right-clicking while holding a vessel will allow direct transfer of its contents to and from containers.

The Rubber gloves can either be made from Leather and Latex, or out of Rubber Sheets. They provide protection from any Skin Contact hazards, such as Beryllium Dust.
First, knap the leather into mittens.

Mittens are then soaked in Vinegar, a mixture of fruit and alcohol.

Prepared leather gloves are then heated in a vat with Vulcanized Latex, one step away from rubber.

A completed Hazmat suit provides immunity from every hazard, even radiation. It is made in an LV Assembler from Polyethylene and Polyvinyl Chloride.

In case you do get heavily exposed to a hazard, there are some Medicines that can help you recover.
Basic Pills are the most primitive and easy to make, but most come with Negative Side Effects. Tablets and Salvos are more effective and have less side effects, but they require LV equipment and more advanced resources to make.
The RadAwayᵗᵐ pill
This is The Ultimate cure for ALL the hazards and the ONLY effective cure to Radiation. However, it is also the most Expensive and Difficult to make, requiring HV tier equipment and advanced materials.

If all else fails, bringing along a bed to respawn is a good idea.
If you don't have access to Wool or String, you can also make a Thatch Bed.
Arsenicosis
Arsenicosis is an illness caused by inhaling Arsenic from its dust, vapor or Realgar. It slowly increases hunger, followed by nausea, and eventually death.
The Face Mask and the Hazmat Suit provide protection from Arsenicosis.
Asbestosis
Asbestosis is an illness caused by inhaling Asbestos dust. If carried for long enough, it causes hunger.
The Face Mask and the Hazmat Suit provide protection from Asbestosis.
Berylliosis
Berylliosis is an illness caused by skin contact with Beryllium dust or Liquid Beryllium. At first it might seem that it doesn't do much. However, the longer the exposure, the faster it kills you.
Gloves and the Hazmat Suit provide protection from Berylliosis.
Carbon Monoxide poisoning
Carbon Monoxide poisoning is an illness caused by inhaling Carbon Monoxide gas. Prolonged exposure causes nausea and quick death.
The Face Mask and the Hazmat Suit provide protection from Carbon Monoxide.
Carcinogens
Carcinogens are substances that cause Cancer. They include Chromium Dust aswell as some organic compounds, such as Benzene and its products. Carcinogens don't go away on their own, but they give plenty of warnings before doing any real harm. It starts off with Weakness, followed by Hunger, then Slowness and later on Mining Fatique. Only when substantial enough exposure is accumulated it causes Death.
Carcinogens
The Face Mask protects from inhalation of harmful chemicals, while the Gloves protect from contact with Chromium Dust.
The Hazmat Suit protects from both.
In case of severe exposure, it is advised to take some Medicines to Prevent any possible damage.

Chemical burns are caused by inhalation or skin contact with certain Gases, Acids, Bases or Dusts. Exposure causes Weakness.
The Face Mask protects from inhalation, while the Gloves protects from direct skin contact.

Irritants
Irritation is caused by inhalation of Ammonium Formate or skin contact with Chromite Dust. Short contact only causes Weakness, but if ignored for longer it starts Damaging Randomly.
The Face Mask protects from inhalation, while the Gloves protects from direct skin contact.
The Hazmat Suit protects from both.
Methanol poisoning
Methanol poisoning is caused by inhalation of Methanol. It causes a strong Blindness effect.
The Face Mask and the Hazmat Suit protects from inhalation.
Nauseating chemicals
Nauseating chemicals, such as Butyraldehyde, are substances that cause Nausea when inhaled.
The Face Mask and the Hazmat Suit protect from inhalation.
Poisonous materials
There are two types of Poisonous materials. Weak include Lead Dust, while the stronger poisons include Nitrogen Dioxide. Weak poisons cause a Progressively Worsening Poison effect, while Regular poisons cause Weakness and a Stronger Poison effect.
The Face Mask protects from inhalation, while the Gloves protects from direct skin contact.
The Hazmat Suit protects from any contact.
Radioactive materials
Most Radioactive substances like Uranium 238 you will only meet at EV tier or above. They will Permanently Irradiate you. Small exposure causes glowing, but prolonged contact triggers a quick Death.
We know it looks tasty and has a billion calories, but PLEASE DO NOT EAT URANIUM!

Only the Hazmat Suit, as well as some advanced armors provide full protection from radiation.
In the case you do get irradiated, only the RadAwayᵗᵐ pill can cure you.
Silicosis
Silicosis is an illness caused by inhaling Silicon Dioxide Dust. Exposure causes a Reduction in both Health and the Air Supply you have while diving Under Water.
The Face Mask and the Hazmat Suit provide protection from inhalation of silicon dioxide.
